Summer of Fungus

With a packed summer of art-related events and activities filling my calendar for months to come, here’s a rundown of some of the things I have cooking - all of which happen to launch in JUNE because there’s nothing like doing everything all at once.

It means I’m busy, but it means YOU have fun things to see and do!

Lost Creek Hiking Trail Fungi Hunt

This “scavenger hunt” type public art installation is spread across the 6.5 mile Lost Creek Hiking Trail near Chatfield, MN. Lifelike crochet models of native fungi species (chicken of the woods, puffball and turkey tail to name a few) have been placed on dead wood visible from the trail.

An art reception and group trail hike will be taking place June 8. Meet at Jordan Town Hall (18380 County 102, Chatfield, MN) at 10 a.m. for this free, family-friendly event. I'll be giving an artist talk, as well as selling a variety of mushroom-themed art.

The art will stay up for a full year, so put the trail on your list to hike and consider visiting it in different seasons to see how the mushrooms blend in or stand out.

First art market of the summer! Find me at Swede Hollow Park in St Paul on June 1 along with many, many other artists, creators, and food/beverage vendors. I will have been up at the crack of dawn to get there and set up in time for the start of the festival at 10 a.m., so ply me with water, oranges, and coffee if you’re kind enough to stop by. I’ll be bringing new crochet paintings, greeting cards, stuffed animals, and a selection of fungi art on foraged bark.

Another scavenger hunt - this one international but you can participate in Rochester. Artists participating in Game of Shrooms hide mushrooms in public spaces and for one day only, whatever mushrooms you find, you get to keep!

I’m cooking up some mushroom designs and will hide them in a few parks around Rochester. I’ll share teasers and previews of these mushrooms on my Instagram, so follow @amigurumihorde for those details.

In the meantime, you can visit the full Game of Shrooms website to register as an artist and hide mushrooms of your own to see pins for other artists in your area (Rochester or elsewhere) who may be hiding them.

Sensory Sculpture Garden @ Dream Acres Farm

Remember last year when I did pop-up workshops at Dream Acres Farm near Spring Valley, MN? Remember last year when I exhibited the 5-part Sensory Sculpture Garden that resulted from 6 months work and those pop-ups?

The Sensory Sculpture Garden is coming back baby and we’re bringing it to Dream Acres for wood-fired pizza nights during the entire month of June!

Every Friday from 5-8 p.m. you can get a vegan wood-fired pizza and while you’re waiting for your number to be called, swing by and tour the art.

I’ll be posted up at the Hayloft outbuilding (cabin by day, art gallery by evening) to show you around and talk more about the project. There will be five (six if I can get my act together) sculptures on display, including a brand new one which I finished over January and February of this year. I’m very excited to bring this show back and to do it at Dream Acres, where owner Eva Barr was a generous collaborator when I asked to crash pizza nights last year.

Two markets in one month? More likely than you might think. I’m a vendor at the 43rd annual Art in the Park festival put on by Lanesboro Arts Center at Sylvan Park in Lanesboro. I’m looking forward to the scenic drive in (although I’m sure I’ll be making it at the crack of dawn smelling of sunscreen and bug spray). Go visit Lanesboro Arts website to find out more about the event - it’s a pretty cool all-day gig with lots of things to do and it would be really, really cool if you went.

…and that’s a wrap on June!

A very busy month for me, a very fun month for you (and me), and a persistent theme of mushrooms throughout!

More to come on the rest of the summer, by I intend to spend most of July napping with my cat Oliver.
